Good Friday in Minori

18 April 2025

In the enchanting town of Minori, Good Friday unfolds with the poignant and time-honoured tradition of the Battenti Procession. At dawn, the “Battenti,” robed in white and hooded, move solemnly through the town’s streets, chanting their penitential song. Their voices echo across the surrounding hamlets, eventually culminating at midday in the Basilica of Santa Trofimena. By night, the town falls into darkness, illuminated only by the glow of torches and lanterns, creating an atmosphere of deep intimacy and spirituality that envelops locals and visitors alike.

The chant of the Battenti, with its distinct shifts between Ton’ e vascie and Ton’ e ncoppe (reflecting the historical presence of confraternities across the area), dates back to the 14th century. This tradition has been carefully studied by ethnomusicologist Roberto De Simone, who played a significant role in preserving its legacy. In 2010, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage recognised this chant as an “Intangible Ethno-anthropological Heritage,” a cultural treasure for Minori and the Amalfi Coast.
