Every summer for over four hundred years, Praiano has been illuminated by a magical glow for the Luminaria di San Domenico, one of the most enchanting festivals on the Amalfi Coast. From the 1st to the 4th of August, the village is transformed by thousands of candles, torches, and lanterns, lighting up not only Piazza San Gennaro but also the town’s most picturesque and hidden corners, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality and breathtaking beauty. The highlight of the event falls on the 4th of August, when Piazza San Gennaro becomes the stage for a mesmerising luminaria, enhanced by fire performances from jugglers and acrobats.
The festival takes place at the Convent of Santa Maria a Castro, perched high above Praiano, and traces its origins back to 1606, when Dominican friars from Naples brought the cult of Saint Dominic to the town.
The tradition itself stems from a vision experienced by Saint Dominic’s mother: before his birth, she dreamt of a dog holding a flaming torch in its mouth, symbolising her son’s mission to spread the faith. This vision is brought to life during the Luminaria, as for three consecutive evenings, Piazza San Gennaro and the homes of Praiano glow in the light of thousands of candles placed by locals on terraces, windowsills, and along narrow alleyways. In the past, lanterns were crafted from tin cans, rags, and oil, while today the entire town takes part in a spectacular display of light, culminating on the 4th of August with the religious celebrations dedicated to the saint.
Thanks to the work of set designer Gennaro Amendola, who since 2001 has expanded and enhanced the festival, the Luminaria di San Domenico has become one of Praiano’s most iconic celebrations. Each evening, the town is brought to life with a spellbinding display of fire, light, music, and prayer.
